Last Tuesday I shared a lane with an old friend who was also swimming lengths at our local pool. When we both came up for air he mentioned he’ll soon be retiring and knowing one of my practice areas focuses on life transitions he asked for a hot-take on his move to retirement. Without mulling it over, I reflexively offered he might consider “retiring into” something new and not just “out of” his old job. My friend nodded as if to say that was enough to keep him thinking for the next few metres and we both submerged and kicked off for our next round of lengths.

I don’t think that bit I shared was bad advice, but as I dressed for my day I reflected on how incomplete it was. The transition from a professional career to retirement presents significant change in many aspects of life …
